How to keep new year’s resolutions with the help of free apps

How to keep new year’s resolution using apps

We’re sure that many of you made New Year’s resolutions with the best of intentions. Heck, this wasn’t just a new year, it was a new decade! Time to make some real changes in your life and become the person you always wanted to be. Right? Well, we’re also sure that many of you have already discovered that creating this new improved you is going to take a little bit more work than you thought. But never fear, Ting is here to help. In this article, we’re going to show you how to keep new year’s resolutions with a little assistance from some free apps.

We went around the Ting offices and asked people what their resolutions were, and will be addressing five of the most popular responses. So without further ado, let’s get to work on making 2020 the year that you make your resolution a reality.

Exercise More with Strava

Every year we used to tell ourselves that this was going to be our year to get more fit, and every February we found ourselves sitting on the sofa, chips in hand and Netflix asking if we’re still watching.

This, however, was before we discovered Strava. Strava is a fitness app that can record a variety of activities, from running and cycling to kayaking and snowboarding. What we particularly like about this app, however, is the competitive nature of it.

We don’t know about you, but we sometimes struggle to motivate ourselves without a bit of friendly competition. This competitiveness is exactly what Strava is geared for. For one, you can follow your friends and have them follow you. This means they’ll be able to see how far and fast you went. We find this really gives us a motivation boost, knowing that our nearest and dearest are able to see how hard we’re working. On the other hand, if you’re considering giving yourself a day off and you get a notification saying that your best friend has just smashed a six-mile jog, it won’t be long before you’re tying up the laces to your running shoes.

Strava also creates competition by dividing up commonly traveled routes into segments and creating leaderboards based on these distances. This allows you to see how you compare to others who have tackled the same routes that day, that year and even ever. This really helps you to demand the best from yourself and it’s super rewarding watching yourself move up the rankings.

One thing that is important to note about Strava is that to create these public leaderboards, the app requires you to share personal information, specifically geolocation data. If that’s not something you’re comfortable with, you can manage what data you’re sharing, and with who, in the app’s settings.

The basic version of Strava is free and works on iOS and Android.

Eat healthier with Calorie Counter by FatSecret

Eating healthier often goes hand in hand with wanting to exercise more and this is a resolution that Calorie Counter by FatSecret can help with.

Despite its rather unfortunate name, this app can really help you achieve your nutritional goals. We say “nutritional goals” because the app is not necessarily geared toward weight loss. Whether you’re looking to gain, maintain, or lose weight, Calorie Counter allows you to input exactly what your goals are.

Using the barcode scanner, or image recognition feature, the app allows you to keep track of exactly what you’re consuming. This isn’t limited to calories, and the app will show you how many grams of protein, carbs, fats, etc. are in your food. This information is then filtered into easily digestible (see what we did there?) reports that allow you to follow your progress.

Calorie Counter also has a fantastic community, which is ready to provide support, as well as offering healthy recipes and meal ideas.

The basic version of Calorie Counter by FatSecret is free and is available on iOS and Android.

Cut down on your phone usage using Space

We know what you’re going to say. “Using an app, on your phone, to cut back on how much you’re using your phone? That’s ridiculous!” And we get it, for some people this makes no sense. But for others, apps like Space are an invaluable tool.

Space is designed to help you think about your phone usage and how it affects your life. The app allows you to set usage goals around screen time and phone unlocks and track your daily progress.

Space gives you a variety of tools to help you achieve your goals. You can get the app to interrupt you if you’ve overstepped your predetermined limits, block notifications during certain hours or dim your screen if you’re using your device too much.

Need a little more of an incentive? Space has preset achievements, such as On your phone <1 hour, that you can collect. You can even add friends and compare your usage to theirs, which acts as a further discouragement to pick up your device.

As we have mentioned, not everyone needs an app like this to curb their usage. But if you’re looking to cut down on how much you use your phone and think that these tools, and the gamification of the app, would help you then check it out!

The basic version of Space is free and available on both iOS and Android

Sleep Better with Sleep Cycle

Getting enough sleep is crucial to our health and general wellbeing, and yet it’s all too easy to slip into bad habits. With the help of Sleep Cycle, however, this year you will be able to sleep better and wake up feeling more rested, and ready to take on the day.

Sleep Cycle is a smart alarm clock that tracks your sleeping patterns and uses this information to wake you up at the right time. This “right time” is whilst you are in a light sleep, something which Sleep Cycle is able to determine just through accessing your device’s microphone. This will make waking up feel more natural, and leave you feeling less groggy. Sleep Cycle is able to gather all the data it needs just through the use of your mic, so there’s no need to have your phone under your pillow or involve any additional tech.

Each morning, you will wake up to detailed sleep data that better enables you to understand how you sleep. Over time, this data can be used to help you maximize the quality of your sleep by identifying patterns and trends. The app will even tell you how much you snore! (Although this might be a piece of info you’d rather you didn’t know.)

The basic version of Sleep Cycle is free and can be downloaded on both iOS and Android.

Additionally, you can opt into alerts, which will notify you when you hit your limit, have higher than average spending and more.
