Check your AT&T phone, get a free coffee

If you’ve got an active AT&T phone and two minutes to spare, you can get a $5 coffee card just by seeing if you can bring your phone to Ting.

Since we added a GSM network to the Ting offering, over 80% of phones made in the last couple of years will work on Ting. That includes a majority of AT&T phones. Hence this little promotion.

Now, if we’ve been at all effective in our marketing efforts, you already know that people can save a lot of money by switching to Ting for mobile phone service. Also, you know that while we’re great for people with just one phone, the more devices you have active on an account, the less you pay per device on average. If not, well, you do now.

We’re sweetening the pot with this coffee gift card give-away. Not only does a $5 gift card buy a whole lot of pumpkin spice lattes (well, one pumpkin spice latte) but if you can bring the phone you already own then the choice becomes even easier to make.

Here’s how it works

This promotion starts at midnight ET on October 20 and runs until 11:59pm ET on October 22.

  1. Grab your active AT&T phone, open up the phone dialer and dial *#06# to find your phone’s unique serial number (IMEI). More info on finding your IMEI is available here.
  2. On your computer, go to the Ting coffee promo page and fill out the form.
  3. We’ll tell you whether or not your AT&T phone would work on Ting, if you chose to bring it over.
  4. We’ll send your $5 coffee card to the email address you provided on or before the end of day Monday, October 26.

Just to be clear, going through this phone checking process doesn’t change anything at all on your phone. There’s zero obligation and we’re not about to start sending you a bunch of junk email or start calling you at all hours. That’s not how we operate.

Great Ting mobile deals all through September

There are some exciting things happening in the Ting shop in September. We’ve got some phones on sale, we’re offering GSM SIM cards for just $5 and to sweeten the pot further, we’re offering free shipping on everything we sell all month long.

Ting GSM SIMGSM SIM cards: $5

80% of smartphones can come to Ting (check yours). For a majority of phones, all that’s required to get up and running on Ting is a GSM SIM card. To make the decision easier than ever, we’ve knocked the price down to just $5 for a Ting GSM SIM card for the rest of September.

Free shipping, site-wide

Everything we sell ships free for the month of September. No promo codes or prequalifications necessary. Just buy something (like a GSM SIM card or one of the phones we’re about to talk about) and you’ll see that standard shipping doesn’t cost a dime.

Phones on sale

We’ve slapped the sale sticker on several phones in the Ting shop, with discounts up to $80. Everything from low to high-end phones is covered, and the sale is primarily on CDMA (Sprint network) phones, but we’ve got one GSM phone on offer too.

Ting Unboxing and a giveaway: LG G4

LG G4 – Ting shop (CDMA)

Update: Congratulations to Humphrey L whose YouTube comment was randomly selected to win the LG G4.

The LG G4 is the latest Android flagship to hit the Ting shop. A smart evolution from last year’s LG G3, this successor brings significant improvements to the camera and display.

For 100 bucks less than both the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6, you also get a removable battery and removable storage for up to two terabytes via microSD! Not a bad deal if you ask us.

What’s more? We’re giving away one of these bad boys to a lucky reader.

How to enter:

  1. Subscribe to Ting on YouTube.
  2. Comment on the LG G4 Unboxing YouTube video (not this blog post) letting us know whether or not you think flagship smartphones are still worth it, and why.

Ting SIM in the Adafruit store plus an Adafruit promo code for Ting people

adafruit-logoIf you’re a geek or if you have geeky underpinnings, you’ve probably heard of Adafruit.

If you aren’t and therefore haven’t, think of them as the RadioShack of the new millennium, but cast your memory back to when RadioShack was the go-to place for electronics hobbyists and tinkerers as opposed to just a reminder of those halcyon days.

Not for the faint of heart, the Adafruit online store stocks everything your computer or robotics hobbyist didn’t even know they needed. Now, that list of components, boards and other techie bits includes Ting GSM SIM cards in the mix.

We at Ting are fans of tinkering, which is why we’re excited about this little deal.

Ting Unboxing and a giveaway: Galaxy Note 4

Available in white or black.
Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is now in the Ting shop!

An exceptional smartphone both inside and out, the Note 4 sports a beautiful 5.7-inch high res display cased inside a metal frame – a first for the Note series and a great addition at that.

It includes the classic S Pen that sets the Note 4 apart from other phablets on the market, and has a camera that’s in contention for the top Android spot.

The latest Ting Unboxing, featured below, reveals the Galaxy Note 4 in all its glory in just under two minutes.

To celebrate the Note 4’s arrival, we’re giving one away!

Background data breakdown: Facebook

Some apps are using data even if you’re not actively using them.

It’s called background data or background syncing and, if this were a TV news stinger right before we cut to commercial, we’d say “and it may be robbing you blind.” While it can be nice to have the latest tweets, status updates and Snapchat stories waiting for you, that convenience comes with a mobile data use cost.

Learn more about controlling which apps can access background data on Android and iOS.

This got us to thinking: How much background data do popular apps, in this example, Facebook, use without us even realizing?

That’s where you (and this fun contest) come in.

We’d like to see how much background data Facebook used on your Android phone over one full month.

Contest has ended, thanks to everyone who submitted.

*Congrats to our lucky winners, David L (OnePlus One), Sarah S, Connor L and Justin A!
