Switch to guest mode on your Android

Ting tip

Quick tips to get the most from your phone, your favorite apps and your Ting service. No fluff. Just the tips.

Let’s say your kid wants to play some Candy Crush on your phone. You unwittingly hand the thing over and the next thing you know, they’ve accidentally spammed the bulk of your work contacts.

Cute, right? But let’s say, for whatever reason, that you don’t want that to happen.

Android has a helpful native feature called Guest Mode. Turn it on whenever you let someone else use your phone and limit what they have access to. They’ll be able to open the default apps on your phone but won’t be able to see any of your data (your accounts won’t be logged in). Whether it’s your kid, your mom or your roommate, don’t worry about prying eyes getting into your contacts, messages, pictures and other saved data.

We’ll show you how.

Take control of how your Android apps use data with NetGuard

netguard

Complete control over how your apps use data

NetGuard (for Android) lets you selectively block apps from accessing your cellular data, Wi-Fi connection, or both, without requiring root access. This can be useful in a number of circumstances.

For example, you could block cellular data access for Twitter, Facebook or Instagram if you want to check your cached feeds without the app auto-refreshing and using your mobile data connection.

Or, if you notice an app using mobile data when it shouldn’t be, NetGuard can block it from ever being able to access the cellular network again. This is especially useful for streaming services like Spotify which may use a minimal amount of data even after downloading your music for offline use.

It’s also great for apps that don’t play well when handing-off from the cellular network to a Wi-Fi connection (and vice versa), letting you choose one permanent option.

It is super easy to set up and use – just grab it from Google Play and keep data-hungry apps from driving up your cell phone bill.

Part of that “more” is the option to lower the amount of data usage being used by WhatsApp. Besides the obvious answer of connecting to Wi-Fi, there are three toggles built into the WhatsApp Settings menu that will reduce the amount of cellular data used by your smartphone.

long distance calling

Does Ting do long distance calling?

That’s a question we get a lot. The answer is yes, yes we do.

Ting minutes are nationwide with no long distance fees in the US. Our international long distance rates have always been quite reasonable too.

To call abroad, just allow international long distance calls on your account. This feature is controlled per phone.

Global texts have always been free of surcharge on Ting because we don’t believe in charging people for things that don’t cost us anything.
