How to block unwanted callers

At Ting, we know there’s nothing worse than getting calls from annoying telemarketers that won’t take no (or other, choicer word options) for an answer. How to block unwanted calls? We’ll show you how.

Devices running iOS 7+ and the majority of Samsung-specific Android smartphones offer built-in ways to block incoming calls. While both native features offer the ability to block known and unknown callers, iOS allows you to block texts and Samsung lets you block all numbers outside of a select list.

Own a device that doesn’t inherently offer call blocking? Don’t sweat it, there are some excellent Android apps that can prevent calls and texts from coming through to your smartphone. We’ll cover our top pick in this article too.

Block unwanted calls natively

Samsung Galaxy’s Blocking Mode

Available for the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8 and Galaxy Note 2, Note 3, Note 4, Note 5 and Note 7 series

With Samsung’s Blocking Mode feature, you can take two routes to Samsung galaxy Blocking Moderestrict unwanted callers: Add specific numbers to an auto-reject list, or automatically block all numbers outside of the contacts you select.

To add numbers to your auto-reject list:

  • Open the Settings menu
  • Tap Call, then open Call rejection
  • You can add to your auto-reject list, select whether to reject specific numbers (or all incoming calls) and set up an automated text response.

To block all numbers outside of specific contacts:

  • Open the Settings menu
  • Tap Blocking Mode under “Personalization”
  • You can block all incoming calls and create an “Allowed contacts” list.
  • It also has a timer that you can set to automatically enable, say, if you don’t want to be disturbed between the hours of 12 PM – 6 AM.

How to block unwanted callers on iOS

Blocking phone calls and texts on an iOS device is a breeze.

To block a known caller:

  • Head to Contacts
  • Tap the person you want to block
  • Scroll to the bottom, tap “Block this Caller” then “Block Contact”

To block an unknown caller:

  • Head to Recents
  • Tap the Info button ( i ) next to the number you want to block.
  • Scroll to the bottom, tap “Block this Caller” then “Block Contact”

To block text messages:

  • Open the message from the number you want to block.
  • Tap Details in the top right
  • Tap the Info button ( i )
  • Scroll to the bottom, tap “Block this Caller” then “Block Contact”

Android apps to block unwanted calls

After researching several call blocker apps on Google Play, we found that the majority offer almost an identical experience. While a few apps include extra features at a premium, we’ve found an excellent app that should solve all your text and call blocking needs.

Block unwanted callers - Mr NumberMr Number

Mr Number is the most comprehensive call and text blocker app available. It allows you to block different “groups”, like suspected spam, specific area codes, or all numbers not currently in your contacts. You can also add “Exceptions” if you’re looking to block all incoming calls, outside of a select few numbers.

Mr Number also offers 20 number lookups for free, which pulls the first and last name of the incoming caller.

Mr. Number is available for free on Google Play.

*Currently, text blocking isn’t available on Android 4.4 (Kit-Kat).
