New cord-cutting tech revealed at CES 2018

The Consumers Electronic Show, or CES, is like candy to the sweet tooth for anyone who loves the newest technology products. Everything from the best in smartphones and VR to the latest in dishwashers—it is all at CES 2018.

With over 100,000 attendees, it is also one of the largest trade shows in the United States. We were among those to attend this year’s Consumers Electronic Show in Los Vegas to preview some of its exciting products and services.

Here are some of the biggest cord cutting stories from CES 2018.

5G home Internet

If you aren’t fortunate enough to live in a Ting Town or a city with access to high-speed gigabit fiber Internet, you might be interested to learn more about 5G home wireless Internet, which claims to be the next best thing.

Intel hosted a demonstration of their 5G home Internet this year at CES. The hands-on demo showed streaming movies and virtual reality working through a 5G Internet connection.

Word has it that several carriers, like Verizon and AT&T, have plans to roll out 5G home Internet in select markets in 2018. This should greatly accelerate the rollout of high-speed Internet to Americans all over the United States in the years to come.


New Roku TVs

TCL 6-Series

The TCL 6-Series includes a 4K high dynamic range picture. The set will support Dolby Vision HDR and now boasts HDR Performance Package Pro to further elevate the experience. The HDR Performance Package Pro includes Contrast Control Zone Technology, a new iPQ Engine and a versatile HDR Pro Gamma control.

TCL 5-Series

TCL announced a new 5-Series with 4K UHD picture quality that also includes Dolby Vision HDR for a stellar imaging experience. The 5-Series includes TCL’s HDR Performance Package, which features HDR Dynamic Contrast.

TCL says the 6-Series and the 5-Series Roku TVs will be released in spring 2018.


Roku Connect Smart Speakers

The TCL Alto smart speaker will take advantage of the Roku OS to deliver a superb entertainment experience. It will offer premium sound, while taking advantage of Roku Connect to connect to other AV devices, and it will use new voice controls accessible through the Roku Entertainment Assistant—giving you access to your favorite TV shows and movies just by asking.

The new line of Roku Connect Smart Speakers should be hitting stores in the fall of 2018.


Channel Master’s SMARTenna+

CES 2018

Channel Master, the company best known for their line of OTA DVRs, announced a new smart antenna called SMARTenna+.

This 60-mile indoor antenna uses new Active Steering technology from Ethertronics. With this Active Steering feature, the antenna will automatically maximize TV channel reception, making your indoor antenna perform better than ever before.


New Android TV Smart TVs

Google needs a big 2018 for Android TV, and they are off to a great start with new Android TVs coming from Hisense, Philips, Haier and Westinghouse. This expands the line of Android TV Smart TVs past the long-standing Sony brand, so if you’re in the market for a new TV soon, you’ll have a wide variety to choose from.
