We ♥ WiFi

Tucows (the company that brings you Ting) has a simple mission that has guided everything we’ve done in our 17-year history. Our mission is to “create simple, useful services that help people unlock the power of the Internet.”

That mission and our belief that the Internet is the greatest agent of change the world has ever seen, have made us staunch supporters of the “Open Internet” and the causes that work to safeguard and expand it. We support the EFF, Creative Commons, Chilling Effects, Freedom To Connect and numerous other Open Internet causes. We were also heavily involved in the 2012 campaign against SOPA/PIPA.

I thought it might be interesting for the Ting community to know that we’re also (some might say counter-intuitively) backing an initiative to spread the use of Open Spectrum called We ♥ WiFi.

We believe the Open Internet benefits everyone and that businesses (including ours) should adapt to changes in technology rather than attempting to maintain the status quo using political pressure and / or market dominance.

We ♥ WiFi hopes the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will make good on their promise to expand the amount of “whitespace” spectrum available for general use.

Whitespace allows anyone to innovate around wireless communications. It means that people don’t have to go to a carrier or technology company or government bureau if they want to use that spectrum. They just need to follow the guidelines put in place that allow for the sharing of that whitespace. It’s like the opposite of a spectrum auction.

We ♥ WiFi is raising awareness of the issue and asking Americans to express their opinions on the matter to the FCC. It is also making a “Super WiFi” network available to the hipsters attendees of SXSWi over the next few days.

I hope you’ll take some time to visit the We ♥ WiFi website and that you will seriously consider lending this and other Open Internet causes your support.

As in all matters pertaining to the Open Internet, we believe it’s important.
